چکیده
OF THESIS EXPLORING CLEFT SENTENCES AND OTHER ASPECTS OF SHUGHNI SYNTAX Shughni, an under-documented language spoken in Tajikistan and Afghanistan, exhibits most syntactic constructions without deep-to-surface-level transformations, thus creating utterances (including questions) in-situ. However, a unique sentence type—the cleft construction—utilizes movement to front an element that receives primary focus. These Shughni clefts are analogous to the English constructions like ―It is the man whom I saw,‖ derived from the simple declarative statement ―I saw the man.‖ This paper discusses the parameters within which these clefts can occur and posits a unified explanation for the presence of these anomalous sentences in a language that resists movement. Moreover, this sentence pattern in Shughni is falling out of use among speakers of the younger generation, as the language continues to drift toward a system completely lacking in movement; therefore, preservation of this form, which seems to be special in its kind among the world‘s languages, is all the more urgent.

Phrase-boundary model for statistical machine translation labels the rules with classes of boundary words on the target side phrases of training corpus. In this paper, we extend the phrase-boundary model using shallow syntactic labels including POS tags and chunk labels. With the priority of chunk labels, the proposed model names non-terminals with shallow syntactic labels on the boundaries of ...
متن کاملStructure and Intonation in Spoken Language Understanding
The structure imposed upon spoken sentences by intonation seems frequently to be orthogonal to their traditional surface-syntactic structure. However, the notion of "intonational structure" as formulated by Pierrehumbert, Selkirk, and others, can be subsumed under a rather different notion of syntactic surface structure that emerges from a theory of grammar based on a "Combinatory" extension to...
متن کاملReading and Assessing the City / Neighborhood FabricAs a Text. Case Study: Sar-Tapulah Historical Neighbourhood inSanandaj
From a linguistic point of view, the city can be seen as a text, consisting of different components and structures being related to each other beyond a sentence. Looking at the city from this point of view, what establishes a syntactic relationship and cohesion and coherence of the components of the city as a common language is called the syntax of the city. Linguistic study of the text of the ...
متن کاملProsody, Syntax and Parsing
We describe the modification of a grammar to take advantage of prosodic information provided by a speech recognition system. This initial study is limited to the use of relative duration of phonetic segments in the assignment of syntactic structure, specifically in ruling out alternative parses in otherwise ambiguous sentences. Taking advantage of prosodic information in parsing can make a spok...
متن کاملOn Lexical Structure and Syntactic Projection
Donald Davidson’s classic argument that action sentences involve an event place in their argument structure receives important evidence from the overt syntax of Chinese genitive agent constructions, possessive object constructions, and sentences with expressions of event quantification that apparently occupy the syntactic position of objectual modifiers. These constructions present syntax-seman...
